Why is this board so unpopular? (67)

Because of imagebabbies.

People aren't accustomed to using them now, though they're really pleasant once you witness the kind of garbage an imageboard can degenerate to. For all this site's obsession with getting rid of the normals, it's odd how few people acknowledge a textboard's efficacy in keeping them away.

The Textboard doesn't seem to have taken off after the initial flurry of activity following its introduction. It's definitely the red-headed stepchild of the active boards. The type of people that frequent textboards (https://txtchan.org) are quite different from your bread and butter imageboard posters, and I don't think there's enough of them that are also wizards for this place to not be relegated to a backwater. Textboards never really took off in the West; 4chan defeated world2ch early on in the English-speaking internet. You've got to remember though that Reddit is kind of a textboard, but its format hasn't proved resistant to normals. The look here is clunky, and the only Web 2.0ish textboard I know of is https://atob.xyz. Letterbox is nice, too. No images is fine (I won't have to hoard all the ones I come across), but the board should be appealing if you're going to spend most of your time on it. I prefer talkboards a la Otakutalk even though I don't use them. I think some day when current apprentices are old and gray this page will be the last legacy of wizardry online.

Given that Wizchan doesn't require the OP of a thread to upload an image, and that there are stylesheets, extensions, and browser addons that prevent any images from loading, people can browse the imageboard as if it were a textboard. The textboard format holds no advantages over an imageboard; an imageboard can act as a textboard but a textboard can not act as an imageboard, sort of...

I just know that when I make threads that are focused on discussion, I still prefer to make the thread on the imageboard because I usually like the images that people post. They can also embed videos and upload PDF files which can aid the discussion.

Yeah, an imageboard can be repurposed to be a decent textboard. Imageboard UI has just been refined more over the years by virtue of its popularity over the textboard I think. A minimal imageboard-textboard hybrid is kind of half-baked. I still think this board would be good for music threads with more discussion instead of just dumping though.

Can you recommend me any textboards with good communities for a very fucked up in the head wizard who wants company for his misery? I'm sick and tired of the normals on wizchan, it sucks. I have promised myself I would stop posting on wizchan and I intend to keep that promise, but I guess from the URL this is a different domain so it doesn't count.

I wish I could, but I can't in good conscience say I'm qualified to do so. I'm not a regular on textboards unlike with Wizchan, and they appeal to folks with a bit of a strange taste in my reckoning. Think the esoteric shitposting of Feels but different. You'll just have to look through them for yourself (nearly all of them are listed at https://txtchan.org and http://nigga.that.is-super.moe/overtext/). Letterbox (https://afternoon.dynu.com/letterbox.html) as aforementioned is a quite "comfy" place. 4-ch is the closest thing to 4chan in the English textboard world, and 4ct is a bit like 8chan. If you know Spanish, Bienvenido a Internet is for you. There's also two boards for nominal /prog/ramming discussion in the legacy of 4chan's axed textboard, world4ch. It's a bit of a shame you're more likely to find spam than actual serious discussion on most textboards, but on the flip side such frivolous, nonsensical posting means friends or non-virgin behaviorisms rarely come up even if the person on the other end is far from wizardly. Textboard admins/mods don't usually care enough to moderate their slow as molasses boards. This Wizardchan Premium Textboard, hosted on a different server from the main site, appears to actually be moderated regularly. Anyways, I'm sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

textboards are the ultimate normgroid's filter

10 Name: Anonymage : 2017-07-16 02:55 [Del]

Simple answer: popularity would ruin what makes them good. They're all fine as they are.

Realized I misread the question, but it still applies.

12 Name: Anonymage : 2017-07-16 04:50 [Del]

Do you guys visit other textbords http://www.txtchan.org/ they are all unpopular.

13 Name: Anonymage : 2017-07-18 16:02 [Del]

I guess, if the textboard had a decent, presentable stylesheet (now those ones with ugly ass monospaced/serif fonts), it could attract attention a bit more.

Both https://dis.4ct.org and https://dis.tinychan.org have some life, though.
Talking about 50+ posts a day.

>>14
4ct is very bad, lots of mean people there. dis.tinychan has the best/most active prog, goatfinger.ga has the best lounge board (4ct's is much more active but no good for posting).

16 Name: Anonymage : 2017-07-20 07:15 [Del]

>>15
that train has already left, my friend.
goatfinger is on its deathbed, with 3 posts per day because their admin is some autist who spams other boards for users (although he stopped spamming now after someone spammed his site).

Soon it'll be left to 4ct to carry on.

No, but the facts remain the facts. And the facts of this matter are that 4ct is horrible.

20 Name: Anonymage : 2017-07-23 23:02 [Del]

Wow if that's the case then what can we do? Lobby for the conversion of all imageboards to textboards? We must save textboards from the dark well-like pit of total and utter obscurity.

It's better to die in obscurity than flail obnoxiously on your death bed.

Still waiting for an imageboard that just doesn't allow for image posting. Textboard software just isn't as polished as imageboards. It's a shame, really. Maybe one day some enthusiastic guy will actually create a non-picure imageboard.

You know it's possible to simply disable images in vichan, right? Don't let anyone post any image. Is that what you want?

I wish it was more popular. Sure you can browse wizchan with no images but somehow it's not the same thing. It doesn't manage to carry the same mood of this place even though browsing it with no images makes it effectively a textboard. I think this board's content is really separate from the ib culture we have in wizchan.I think that's what it is. Wizchan has become a battlefield of forces I really don't relate to one bit. All the talk about crabs, true wiz, politics and there's always someone lurking to start an argument over something stupid but harmless someone posted. Just because it's an easy argument to attack. I've seen plenty of that. You have some guy posting something silly and gets immediately jumped by some other person taking the post very seriously and trying to start an argument from it. Even glancing through that sort of shit is exhausting, I can't image how people have the energy to actually write and post a reply over something harmless and silly. And that's on Wizchan, a place filled with low energy individuals supposedly. I guess many people here are not exactly low energy, they just use their energy in all the wrong ways but that's for another topic.

But yeah it's pretty sad this place is not more active. I don't think there's much one can do about, like others pointed out textboards really didn't take off on this side of the pond. I think the possibility of replying to content with one image as a reaction made ibs very attractive and at the same time very shitty. I just wish I had somewhere to go online to read interesting, introspective posts all day long if I feel like it. Posts like that seem to appear once in a blue moon.

Wizchan has way, way fewer images than every other board I've seen, it's so close to a textboard that not much reason is there to go here. It also has three major general boards and the textboard is general too. The textboard can likely have a renaissance if it replaces one of the other boards or becomes more topical, with literature and writing as the most obvious option.

38 Name: Anonymage : 2018-10-31 19:51 [Del]

Literally the only reason I don't use the text board is it is way the site is formatted makes it really a pain in my eyes to follow whats going on.

46 Name: Anonymage : 2019-06-14 00:50 [Del]

I think this place could kick off if the line width was less, the font was one of those fonts made for dyslexic people, a better color palette with higher contrast was chosen, and more empty space between posts/reply boxes/other elements was placed in. As it is, this feels very cluttered and hard to read.

Because it's not something that all of the "newfriends" would be into. Most of the people who would be a part of these boards still have moved onto different things in their lives. Those who actually lurk or use textboards are a dying breed. It's also I believe more common in those who were more familiar in the older days of the internet such as the '90s or maybe even the early '00s.

61 Name: Anonymage : 2019-09-11 15:41 [Del]

I think the layout is to blame. The formatting is just much worse than the rest of the site, especially quoted text. Additionally it's put apart from the other boards on the main wizchan page so it's easy to miss.

I agree. The site structure is neither retro-shique or functionally modern. It's better than other textboards I've seen though.

63 Name: Anonymage : 2019-09-14 08:39 [Del]

I don't know, it does have a very Web 1.0 feel to it.
