Less than a month to go, wizards. What are you hoping Santa will bring you this year?

Realistically? I'm not really hoping for anything. I'll probably get a new t-shirt from my mom or something at most.

I have always hated receiving gifts. I never want any of them and I hate having to fake emotional reactions of joy and gratitude. I also feel slightly guilty that people are spending money on me.

My cat's Christmas gifts have arrived today. She's getting a window bed and a new fishing pole toy.

This I think is a pretty common feeling among people like us. I'd be interested to know the underlying cause. It's probably got something to do with being NEET, and selectively choosing what we want to be independent about, since we can't be financially.

I think the first thing is something Dostoyesvky called "excessive consciousness". I know I have that and gifts triggers it particularly. I know I'm a burden, I'm fully aware of it, and receiving gifts exarcerbates my "weight" and "presence" if you will. When you receive a gift you're the focus of someone's attention and by receiving something that costs money you've become more of a burden than before. Receiving a gift also somewhat binds you to the duty of giving a gift, to reciprocate what is perceived as a kind gesture. This also leads to all sorts of predicaments.
At least that's how it works with me. I feel guilty for being a target of someone's concern and then twice as guilty for being unable to reciprocate the gesture. I believe that someone who is a neet slowly develops a self-efacing personality as a natural extension of your role in society, which is 0. When people notice you by giving a gift for example, your attempt to be as nonexistent as possible "without actually fucking dying" is shattered. I don't know.

I guess that's part of the reason. I'd also add that I don't really enjoy social exchanges to begin with so I'd rather not be bothered, so it's a mix of not caring and feeling uncomfortable when others do care.
